The 2007 pitching rotation will be anchored by veteran Mariners Andrew Crowe (Sr, 6-3, 2.52 ERA) and Adam Jung (Sr, 1.62 ERA). New to the Mariners rotation will be Adam Wilson (Sr) and Max Valle (Soph). Wilson and Valle impressed the Mariners coaching staff in the fall of 2006 season and their development has continued into the spring. While the 2007 Mariners are blessed with pitching depth, all four starters will still be expected to log significant innings this season. The bullpen for the 2007 Mariners will have a much different look than it did in 2006, with six new faces and only one returnee. As the lone returnee in the pen, Sam Waldie (Jr) will see time in relief and the occasional spot start for the 2007 Mariners. After an impressive fall season, hard throwing newcomer Geoff Ford (Jr) has earned the early nod as Mariners closer. Ford will be supported by juniors Tom Clark (Jr) and Dylan Craig-Stakaruk (Jr). Both Clark and Craig-Stakaruk can expect to make numerous appearances as they are groomed for starting roles in 2008. Also seeing time in the Mariners bullpen will be Shea Young (Sr) and Thomas Trask (Sr). This will be the first season in the PBL for Young and Trask; however both will be relied on heavily throughout the 2007 season. Rounding out the 2007 pitching staff will be Louis Blanchette (Sr). Being the lone lefthander on the 2007 pitching staff, Blanchette will be used extensively to shut down opposing teams left handed hitters.
Behind the plate, three year Mariner Dan Welch (Sr) will look to fill the void created by the departure of Carson Vitale who has moved onto Laredo College. The Mariners coaching staff is very confident having Welch behind the plate and expect him to lead this year’s team to big things. Conor McDougall (Jr) will back up Welch and will be groomed as the Mariners starting catcher in 2008.
The Mariners infield will be built around returnees Travis MacLachlan (Sr), Josh Campbell (Sr), Duncan Blades (Jr) and Perry Wilkinson (Jr). After being named the top defensive player at the Midget National Championships last year in PEI, Blades will move over to shortstop after spending most of last year at second base. The Mariners are blessed to have multi-dimensional Dave Jollymore (Jr) to back up all four infield positions. When not starting somewhere in the infield, Jollymore will start as the Mariners DH. Sam Lawless (Jr), Austin Russell (Soph) and Max Valle (Soph) will also back up in the infield this year. Lawless, Russell and Valle are all expected to start for the Mariners in 2008, so this season will be a development year for the three.
The 2007 Mariners outfield will feature two returnees and two newcomers. Highly touted Sam Waldie (Jr) will start in right field for the Mariners and will hit in the middle of the order. Veteran Mariner Sean Cowland (Sr) will start in left and will bat leadoff for the 2007 Mariners. Sophomore Nick Cuckovich (Soph) will start in the centre for the Mariners and is expected to hold this spot for the next three seasons, much like his predecessor Cody Fitzsimmons who has moved on to Douglas College. Junior Tom Clark (Jr) will back up all three outfield positions in addition to his role in the Mariners bullpen.
