LHP James Paxton, a graduate of the North Delta Blue Jays program, was drafted in the 1st round (37th overall in 1st Round compensation A*) of the 2009 MLB First Year Players Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays today. Paxton is a 6'4" Junior and starting pitcher with the University of Kentucky. James is following in the footsteps of LHP Jeff Francis (Colorado Rockies) who graduated from the Blue Jays program, went to UBC and then was drafted in the 1st round by the Rockies in 2002. Of course, another famous Blue Jay alumni is Justin Morneau drafted straight from playing with the Jays in the 3rd round of the 1999 draft by the Minnesota Twins.
2009 marks the 3rd straight year that BCPBL players have been drafted in the 1st round. In 2008, Brett Lawrie of the Langley Blaze was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers 16th overall and in 2007 Kyle Lotzkar of the Langley Blaze was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, 1st round supplemental, 53rd overall.
Paxton is the highest drafted Canadian in this year's draft and highest ever Canadian selected by the Toronto Blue Jays! Congratulation to James and his family! * The supplemental first round consists of compensation picks for MLB teams that have lost free agent players during the offseason. Toronto received the 37th overall pick in the draft and the fifth pick of the supplemental first round after Type A free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett signed with the New York Yankees in the offseason.
