Monday, 10 May 2010 06:10

Written by Larry Read (Sports Information Officer, TRU)

Lethbridge, AB — The players of  the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack got their mom’s a present they—or themselves will remember for a long time.   The WolfPack captured their first ever Canadian College Baseball Conference regular season pennant on this day.

The WolfPack won two of three games against the host Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs at Nolan Yard.   TRU won the first game 6-1 and the second one 4-3 to clinch the pennant. The Dawgs captured the final game of the day to square the weekend series at two. The final score was 6-5.

The WolfPack end the CCBC Regular season at 20 and 8 to win the Chris Reitsma Division. PBA is at 12 and 8.

In the first game. Danny Moore (2nd year, RHP, Victoria, BC) tossed a complete game two hitter to record his seventh straight victory.  The win almost assures Moore of a second straight CCBC All-Star selection. He struck out three and walked one. TRU scored one in the second, three in the third, and two more in the fifth inning.  PBA got their lone run in the fourth inning.

Hayden Chies (1st year, RHP, St. Albert AB) took the loss to fall to 2 and 3 on the year. He pitched only one inning. He walked two and struck out one while giving up a run.

Right fielder Yoshi Nakamura (4th year, Yokohama, Japan) was 2 for 2 with an R.B.I..  Shortstop Jarrod Ivan (2nd year, Toronto, ON) was 1 for 3 with a run batted in.  First baseman Jimmy Semeschuk (2nd year, Whitehorse, YT) was 1 for 2 with an R.B.I..

In the second game: TRU broke a 1-1 second inning tie with two runs in the third inning. Matt Walker raised his record to four wins and two losses by tossing a complete game eight hitter. He struck out four and walked three. Kale Wiereng (1st year, RHP, Lacombe, AB) fell to 0 and 3 on the year taking the loss.   He went a complete seven innings giving up five hits, walking one and striking out five.

Dillon Morgan (3rd year, first base, Camp Verde, AZ) was 1 for 2 with a pair of runs batted in.  Shortstop Matt Leschuk (1st year, Kamloops, BC) was 1 for 3 with a run batted in.

Right fielder Josh Lowden (2nd year, Cranbrook, BC) was 2 for 3 with a run batted in.

That victory clinched the pennant for TRU, who will try for their second straight CCBC title next weekend (May 14-16) when they host the championship tournament at Norbrock Stadium.

In the final game of the weekend series:  The Dawgs scored five runs in the fourth inning en route to the victory.    Dillon Morgan came on in relief of starter Mike Juarez (2nd year, RHP, Calgary, AB) and surrendered the winning run.   Morgan went an inning and a third, striking out two.  His record is now 0 and 1.

Dan McNeil (1st year, RHP, Salisbury, AB) came on in relief of starter Zac Armstrong (2nd year, RHP, Erskine, AB) pitched two and two thirds inning for his first win of the season.

Matt Leschuk was 2 for 2 for TRU with two runs batted in.  Third baseman Tanner Gainer (2nd year, Williams Lake, BC) was one for two with two runs batted in.

Tanner Granberg (1st year, centerfielder, Lethbridge AB) was 2 for 3 with three runs batted in.
