The Parksville Junior Royals are eagerly anticipating the start of their third season in the league. The Royals have six returning players from last season including three BC team members of the 2011 PNC select team. The eight newcomers are from all over the North Island; Powell River, Courtenay, Port Alberni, Qualicum and Parksville. It is always a challenge to put together a team from such a large geographical area, and this year is no exception. There is a solid base of players and tremendous athletic versatility that complements the team make up. The Royals philosophy has always been about providing an opportunity for player development. While many of our new players lack experience of play at this level, they have demonstrated great work ethic, attitudes and a willingness to learn. Catchers: Starter Matt Ney is a solid defender that will be expected to lead the Royals both with his bat power and with his very capable defensive abilities. He will be supported by a number of players including returning player Brett Genoe. These two players will no doubt bat very high in the order. Infielders: Oceanside standout Matt Yoachim will bring his solid defensive style to first base and some impressive bat power to the line up. He will also get time at shortstop. At second base rookie, Dallas Monk has shown impressive improvement and is able to handle this position well. Returning infielder, Kevin Biro, has moved over to the short stop position this year. Biro will also see some time on the mound as the season unfolds. New to the Royals, Courtenay’s Jesse Horton will see some time in the infield at third base and short stop, but will be relied upon heavily for his starting pitching. Chris Olszewski also see action at 2nd and 3rd base. Brett Genoe will round out the infield with his solid contribution at the third base position. Outfielders: Veteran players Colin Wright and Scott Cooper will lead the outfield with their speed and experience. They will be joined by rookie Mychal Rodway. Rodway will also see time in the infield. New to the Royals and seeing some time in the outfield are Caleb Hempsted from Port Alberni and Clayton Thom from Powell River. Thom will also be taking his turn on the mound throughout the season. Pitching: Returning to the Jr. Royals is RHP, Scott Cooper. He will be expected to take a regular position in the starting rotation and will see double duty in the outfield. New to the Royals pitching line up is Jesse Horton, who has been working diligently to improve his mechanics and velocity. Also new on the mound this season, LHP, from Deep Bay, Aaron Foulds. Foulds is no stranger to Oceanside baseball and will be called upon to deliver in the regular rotation this season. . LHP Kevin Phillippe will provide some welcome help to the Jr. Royals while he recovers from injury. For relief pitching this season the Royals will be looking to Kevin Biro and rookies Clayton Thom and Mitchell Powelson. The Royals bullpen has shown some improvement since the fall and has caught the attention of the coaches. It will prove to be an entertaining season for sure. |
