The Victoria Jr. Mariners will have a new looking lineup for 2013 but expect to build on their 2012 Provincial Championship. With 16 new faces, the team is preparing to develop and contend for another Provincial Title.
Behind the plate, the Mariners have the luxury of having two athletic rookies, Dylan Werrun and Nick Seginowich. The coaching staff will rely on the leadership of Werrun through out the season. Look for Seginowich to be a staple in the middle of the line up and to drive in runs.
On the mound, the Mariners have several pitchers who will contend for innings on any given weekend. Look for Noah Brasset to guide a promising staff through out the season. Cole Russell, Liam Catto, Brett Irvine, Angus Catto, and Jordan Strandlund will battle for innings through out the year and look to carry the staff. The Mariners coaching staff are hoping to see Kieran Russell bounce back from injury to be a big part of the pitching Staff.
Around the infield, the Mariners are lucky to have a big group of talented ballplayers. At 1st the Mariners will have Jordan Strandlund. Look for both Jake Bosenceand Nolan Bruce to play both 3rd and 1st throughout the season. Bosence will be relied on to drive in runs for the Mariners. Brett Irvine and Angus Catto will see time at third throughout the summer, while also spending time in the outfield. The Mariners coaching staff has seen great growth in the players that will be playing in the middle. Jeremy Patte and Chris Blaskovichrson will see the majority of the time at shortstop and look to be the table setter for the middle of the line up. Robin Dix, Cole Haddock, and Tyler Schindel will all see time at 2nd base. These three show great work ethic and look to improve through out the summer. In the outfield, the Mariners have Kieran Russell returning for his second season in left field. Due his experience, the Mariners coaching staff relies on Russell’s leadership and guidance. Kurtis Gamble will see time in LF and looks to gain experience under Russell. In CF, the Mariners will have Sam Glowicki and hope to see the growth of Cole Haddock. Both players will make it hard for opposing runners to take extra bases. Brett Irvine, Liam Catto and Cole Russell will play right field for the M’s and will cut down runs because of their strong arms.

One of our Mariner players, Zack Downey, was admitted into Childrens Hospital in Vancouver last Wednesday November 7th to undergo oncology testing. Zack and family are still there while they await a diagnosis from the medical staff. LVI and the entire Victoria Mariner baseball organization sends out their thoughts and prayers to Zack and family, and are crossing their fingers for a full and speedy recovery.
It is expected that the family will incur considerable costs over the coming days in terms of meals, travel, accomodation and other expenses. To help offset this, the Victoria Mariner baseball community will be setting up several fund raising activities.
First, at a player and family meeting at Oak Bay Rec on Nov 12, over $500 was collected by passing around a hat. That money, along with a signed BC JPBL Championship banner, a poster-sized signed photo of the players winning the provincial title, and several cards will be delivered to the Downeys in Vancouver this week. Thanks to all those that chipped in.
Second, this website will now accept PayPal donations, so families and supporters can make a deposit via credit card into a secure PayPal account. Any and all funds collected will be passed directly to the Downey family. Please click on the Donate button (on the Mariners website) to make a donation via your credit card.
Next, a bottle drive has been organized for this Saturday, Nov. 17th starting at 10:00am at Lambrick Park lacrosse box/tennis courts. Please canvass your neighbourhoods, businesses, friends or family and bring along all your empty bottles and cans. We will sort them on the tennis courts during the morning and early afternoon. All monies collected will be given to the Downeys. We are working on a flyer that can be sent around in advance of the bottle drive. Once ready this will be emailed and posted on the Mariners site (under Documents) for downloading.
A trust fund is now set up for Zack. You can go into any Coast Capital Savings branch and make a donation. The fund name is Zack Downey and the member number (on the Mariners website). Please help spread the word to others who may want to donate.
Several other ideas, such as toonie days at schools, a dance, and other events are being discussed. Again watch this site for more details.
Thanks very much for your support in this. If you would like to get involved or have other ideas on how we can help Zack and family, please contact Adrian Somers at adrian.somers@gmail.com or Don Bryan at dsmmbryan@shaw.ca
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Zack and family! Get well soon. [See Mariners website for more information] |

The Victoria Jr. Mariner team brings a good mix of experience and athleticism into the 2012/13 season. With 5 returning players and 13 new faces, the Jr Mariners embark on the season with high expectations of contending for the Provincial Championship, with the primary focus being on developing players for the next level. Behind the plate, the Mariners will count on returning starter Brandon Ashford to anchor the pitching staff and produce in the middle of the line up. Athletic newcomer Evan Badry will also be counted on two log innings behind the plate and produce with the bat. On the mound the Mariners will be led by returning pitchers Dan Phillips and Tyler Deman, as well as second year Junior Premier player Dallas Patterson. All three will be looked at to anchor the starting rotation and throw a lot of innings over the course of the season. Newcomers Nick Dawson, Noah Brasset, Kieran Russell, Jacob Barnard, Quinn Shelby, and Mitch Bryan will also see a lot of time on the mound in key situations. Around the infield the Junior Mariners will be led by returning veterans Lucas Piechnik and Chris Fougner who will anchor the left side of the infield while being expected to get on base and spark the offense. Tanner Hess and Dakota St. Laurent will see time at the corner spots and be counted on to drive in runs in the middle of the lineup but will also be valuable assets to the pitching staff as well. Zack Downey, along with Grade 9, Michael Varley will be counted upon heavily with their versatility to play the infield as well as being a major cog in the Mariners offense. Both players will also see time on the mound. In the outfield the Junior Mariners will have an abundance of speed with Grade 9 Jesse Mycock, along with Mitch Bryan and Nick Dawson who all have the ability to play centrefield and get on base. The Victoria Jr Mariners come into the 2011 Junior Premier season with a roster of 17 players, all of which have aspirations of playing college baseball down the road and are talented enough to do so. Behind the plate the Mariners will have three catchers all competing for time. Evan Willow, Kaelin Norris-Jones and Brandon Ashford all bring different skill sets to the team and will see time behind the plate as well as at other positions. The pitching staff will be led by returning Mariner Jason Johnson, who is back after a successful first year with the Mariners. Also anchoring the pitching staff will be newcomers Jordan Van Stone, Dan Phillips and Tyler DeMan. Cody Newberry will be counted on to provide quality innings out of the bullpen as well as in a staring role. Many other Mariners will also see time on the mound over the course of the season. The infield promises to be strength for this year’s team with steady defenders Chris Fougner, Lucas Piechnik, Drayson Lum and Drew Davidoff playing up the middle. Brandon Feldman and Jordan Judge will be asked to provide solid defence at the corners, while also contributing with their bats. In the outfield, this year’s team has good speed and should be able to track down a lot of balls. Returning Mariner Scott Calverley will see the majority of his playing time in right field and will be counted on to provide pop in the middle of the order. David Warren will see time in centre field and will bring good range to the team. Spencer Scotney will play both corner outfield spots and will be counted on to be a run producer. |

The 2010 Victoria Jr. Mariners are entering the 2010 Junior Premier season with the expectation of being one of the league’s top teams. This team will focus on pitching and team defence, while taking a “small ball” approach on the offensive side. With many athletically gifted young players, the coaching staff has high expectations for this year’s team. Catching will undoubtedly be one of this teams strengths as the Mariners return Brandon Rossum and Ty Russell from last years club. Both Brandon and Ty will be counted on to lead the young pitching staff and to contribute with the bat. Brandon and Ty will be tasked with leading the team, while working at improving their own skills in order to be ready for the jump to the premier team next year. Utility man Aaron Hopwood will also see time behind the plate as well as in the outfield and on the mound. The Jr. Mariners have a deep pitching staff complete with many different looks. Hard throwers Jackson Allabarton and Jesse Long will be counted on to log many innings while also providing big bats in the middle of the lineup from an infield position. Strike throwing machines Nathan McKinlay and Jason Johnson will see many innings on the mound and will bring valued consistency to the team. Left hander Riley Rebitt will see time in both the rotation and the bullpen and will keep the opposing hitters guessing, while lefty Kris Barber will look to contribute to out of the bullpen while giving the team some power in the heart of the batting order. Jordan Toth will serve as the team’s closer and brings a hard to hit side arm delivery to the pitching staff. Seeing time in the middle infield as well as on the mound, this year’s youngest Mariner, Grade 9 Morgan Varley, brings a versatile skill set to the team. Chris Call and Travis Ranger will also occupy the Jr. Mariner’s infield and will bring speed to this year’s club. Lucas Lapinski will be counted on to bring some pop to the line up while anchoring third base with his steady glove. In the outfield Ryan Rufh is looking to make a smooth transition from shortstop to centre field and will be counted on to spark the team offensively. Corner outfielders Scott Calverley and Alex Niketas bring excellent athletic ability to the team and will be counted on to contribute from both the outfield and from the mound. Connor Afcouliotis will see significant time in left field and will bring an excellent glove to this year’s team. |

The 2009 Junior Mariners are looking forward to another productive season with 13 new faces on the 16 man roster. Returning grade 10 Mike Shaw will anchor the pitching staff and be a solid contributor with the glove and bat. Ryan Abraham and Eric Beban the other 2 returnees will also give us pitching and infield depth and leadership. Also in the rotation is Saskatchewan transplant Cole Holt, who along with Shawn Brand, Aidan Verster, Max Newton and 1st baseman, pitcher Jackson McCuaig give the team the depth to handle the many 4 game weekends that Island teams face. Catching duties will be ably handled by the duo of Ty Russell and Brandon Rossum, giving us the opportunity of having both left and right handed hitting catchers in our lineup. Up and coming Grade 9 Jesse Hodges will continue to develop as an outstanding hitter and shortstop while helping out on the mound when the need arises. Our outfield will be led by Dylan Anderson in centre with support from lanky Rico Vandermay and speedster Brenden McGee. Finally power hitting Matt Bridge at 3rd and smooth fielding Sanjeev Kang round out a team that will compete every time out. The developmental philosophy of the Jr Premier league is perfectly suited to these Premier prospects. |

The 2008 edition of the Junior Mariners features an entirely new roster. After a highly successful 2007 campaign that culminated in a provincial championship the 18 player roster has been completely rebuilt. The 2008 Juniors will rely on pitching depth and solid defense to compete.
Starters will include Jim Barbour, Mike Shaw, Connor Russell and Stef Jankowski with ample support from Rob Chittick, Eric Beban, Ryan Abraham, Stef deMontmorency, Kyle Norris Jones and Jacob Livant. Up the middle defensively, Greg Thibadeau and Brody Coulter will turn more than a few double plays while Matt (Boomer) Zupanc will anchor the team at 1st base. AAA recruits Garrett Greenwood along with Levi Kerns will provide much needed offense along with catchers Kelly Norris Jones and Jeremy Campbell, two excellent receivers who will be well backed up Kelly Murray, who will be in his first year of high performance baseball. 2008 should prove to be a year of growth for the Junior Ms and like all Junior Premier teams, the Junior Mariners will provide tough competition in a highly competetive league. |

Victoria went through the tournament undefeated to win the 2007 Provincial 16U Championship this past weekend. The Mariners downed Langley 8-1 on route to their first Provincial Championship. Many thanks to go out to all the volunteers who made this past weekend a success and in particular Rae Kornberger for the work she and her committee did in organizing this outstanding event.
