Brett Lawrie of the Langley Blaze became the highest drafted Canadian baseball positional player ever when he was selected 16th by the Milwaukee Brewers in the first round of the 2008 MLB First Year Players Draft. Brett skyrocketed up the pre-draft rankings due to his dominating performance with the Canadian Junior National team in the Dominion Republic and private workouts with many of the major league clubs. He became the 5th highest high school player to be selected in this year's draft.
Lawrie, in his 4th year in the BCPBL (3 years with Langley and his first year with Abbotsford), has spent most of this season the with the Canadian Junior National Team and showcasing his talents around North America.
Before the year, SS Kevin Nicholson (Whalley Chiefs) was the highest ever Canadian positional player drafted when in 1997 he was selected by the San Diego Padres 27th overall. LHP Adam Loewen (Whalley Chiefs) is the highest Canadian player ever drafted, 4th overall in 2002 by the Baltimore Orioles. Congratulations to Brett, his family, and the Langley Blaze!
